We have all lost our inner flame of motivation at times. As you get older, your time to work on yourself is limited when working a full-time job, married, raising kids and planning for the future. It is just a struggle at times just to get up and get ready for the day. So, how do we get our motivation back? If we want to get better, become more successful we have to strive to navigate back to our center core self, our WHY.
Mission Statement
Your WHY is you mission statement. A mission statement is a short statement of why an organization exists, what its overall goal is, identifying the goal of its operations. So your WHY is the same in my opinion. It is your purpose that describes why you do the work and live the way you do. It’s ultimately the vision of your life. So, how do you find it and when you do, what do you do with it?
Finding your Why
First, we must know what our reason for getting out of bed in the first place is. Why do you do what you do? Why did you become who you are or what you want to be? Why do you want to be successful and live at your full potential? Hopefully, you see the pattern. It all comes back to your WHY. Finding your WHY is a soul searching kind of event. Finding your WHY is very important and more valuable then you think. It can unlock doors that haven’t been open, it can change the course of your life in a positive direction, it can better your relationships and ultimate your quality of life. But, it is even harder to define it let alone find it within you.
3 Keys in finding your WHY:
Visualization — Find a quiet place and close your eyes and do some day dreaming. If you had all the money in the world and solved all life problems then what would you want to do? What would your dream look like, feel like or sound like? Olympic athletes use these techniques to prepare themselves for the upcoming games. They see with their inner eye on winning gold, the crowd cheering and them being at the top of the podium. You need to do the same and visualize your utmost success in your personal and professional life.
Write it down — No one likes to write stuff down, but this is important!! Write down the pros and cons in your current life and job. If the negatives outweigh the positives then you may need to think about changing it up. Write down your dream jobs and what it would take for you to get there. Maybe you need to go back to school or take a online class, maybe you need to just put yourself out there and start sometime new. I can resonant with this one. I’m about five years out from retirement and I was caught in the mud and needed a change. I wasn’t going to just quit my job being this close to retirement, but I needed to go outside the box and challenge myself with sometime way out of my comfort zone.
Peer Support — Sometimes in finding your WHY you need to be sitting in the hot seat. I’m telling you this from experience. This is not fun, but letting your peers critique you and letting them tell you your strengths and weakness is a gold mine of information. We are so inundated with our own life that we forget people are watching us on a daily basis. Maybe, one of them would be brave enough to push you in the direction of your true WHY.
There are more steps in finding your why and a multitude of internet post to give you more information on finding your WHY. I rediscovered my WHY and it was to start my website blogging adventure. I’ve put myself way out of my comfort zone and starting (hopefully in time) a really good blog. Hopefully, you will take a brave leap of faith like me and put yourself out in the world while finding your WHY!!
